Statement from Steven Del Duca on CUPE Full Strike Action

Statement on CUPE Full Strike Action

Today, Ontario Liberal Leadership Candidate Steven Del Duca released the following statement regarding CUPE’s announcement that education support workers will be commencing full strike action on Monday October 7, 2019:

“CUPE Education workers have announced today that they will escalate the existing work to rule campaign to full strike action on Monday October 7, 2019.

It is unfortunate that this labour action is escalating after one week of work to rule action by CUPE. It is not surprising, however, that the Doug Ford government has not been able to arrive at a just settlement that would allow our schools to function safely.And this is a harbinger of things to come as a result of Doug Ford’s wrong-headed approach to public education.

His proposal to drastically increase average class sizes in Grades 9 to 12 by 30% over 4 years is already having an impact on our kids’ ability to obtain the courses they need to graduate and apply to college or university.  And the situation will only get worse as courses are eliminated due to less teachers in the classroom.

The full strike action by CUPE will mean that:

  • Our schools will become dirtier and less safe over the next few weeks;
  • Some early childhood educators will not be in the classroom with our 4 and 5 year -old children; and
  • Educational assistants will not be school to help our children that are most vulnerable and need the most help.

These are just some of the examples of the real impacts on our children and their ability to learn. That’s why I will stand shoulder to shoulder with Ontario's students and their families, as well as with teachers and education support workers in the fight to make this government invest in education – invest in our kids, and in our future. It is never too late to do the right thing: Doug Ford should reverse the cuts unleashed against students before they cause real, lasting damage.

Doug Ford must go back to the bargaining table and treat workers with respect.”
