TORONTO, ON – Ontario Liberal Leadership Candidate Steven Del Duca released the following statement;
Teachers and education workers represented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation are set to strike for one day if no deal is reached.
Doug Ford has failed miserably to strike a fair deal with teachers. He needs to get back to the negotiating table and drop his poison pill plans.
Our school kids and their families should not be the target of Doug Ford's reckless cuts – but that’s been the Ford playbook all along. First it was cuts to OSAP, universities and colleges. Now, they are attempting to undermine public education in Ontario’s high schools.
Let’s be clear: Doug Ford doesn’t believe in public education and doesn’t respect collective bargaining. If he did, he wouldn’t be making cut after cut after cut to Ontario’s schools.
The Ford government plan to impose online courses – which came with no consultation, is harmful to students.
The Ford government plan for higher class sizes will destroy course diversity in Ontario’s high schools. It will see less diverse course offerings including math, science and specialized classes.
Is it any wonder that students, parents and teachers are fighting these cuts?
The Ford government has an opportunity to make the right decision and invest in public education. They have an opportunity to invest in our kids. It’s never too late to do the right thing: Doug Ford should immediately reverse the devastating cuts Doug Ford has unleashed against students.
Every child in Ontario deserves access to high quality public education.
It’s in the best interest of our kids that Doug Ford go back to the bargaining table and strike a fair deal with teachers.
