OSSTF to begin job action
TORONTO, ON – Ontario Liberal Leadership Candidate Steven Del Duca released the following statement;
Teachers and education workers represented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) are beginning their first province wide job action in over twenty years.
Doug Ford has failed to strike a fair deal with teachers. OSSTF’s job action is a measured and fair response to the government that will not affect students. I acknowledge their restraint.
The Ford government announced today they will cut the number of mandatory online courses in half, after unilaterally announcing – without any consultation, that they would implement 4 mandatory online courses per high school student.
Let’s be clear: Doug Ford doesn’t believe in public education and doesn’t respect collective bargaining. If he did, he wouldn’t be making cut after cut after cut to Ontario’s schools.
The Ford government should immediately drop their flawed plan for online courses and bring back the pre-existing class sizes. Only once they drop these poison pills will they be able to reach a deal.
The Ford government has an opportunity to make the right decision and invest in education. They have an opportunity to invest in our kids. It’s never too late to do the right thing: Doug Ford should immediately reverse the devastating cuts Doug Ford has unleashed against students.
Every child In Ontario deserves access to high quality public education.
I know the decision to take labour action was a tough call. I stand with all teachers and education support workers who prioritize high quality public education.
It’s in the best interest of our kids that Doug Ford and Stephen Lecce go back to the bargaining table and treat workers with respect.
